Speed Runs

Speed running (trying to complete a videogame in the fastest time possible) is almost as old as gaming itself. At least, it's almost as old as games that have a definite end point or staging points, since speedrunning a game with infinitely repeating levels is Sisyphean.

This collection hosts downloadable movie files documenting the swiftest possible way to complete videogames such as Quake, Metroid, Zelda and many others. The videos come from Speed Demos Archive, TASvideos, and other sources.

Unless specifically noted as an 'emulated' run, all speed runs are done on the original game hardware, using only the normal save points available to a player.

This 11-minute timeattack of Super Mario Bros. 3 demonstrates secrets that players can use to advance through the game very quickly. Please note : These timeattack were played on an emulator, using game slow-down options and quicksaves. This time attack does not claim to be a contiguous performance, and is for entertainment purposes only. Please see http://bisqwit.iki.fi/nesvideos/WhyAndHow.html for FAQs on this and other timeattacks. Visit http://bisqwit.iki.fi/nesvideos/ for more timeattacks...

Speed run of Super Mario Bros. done on April 10 2007. Available in five versions: low/normal quality DivX, and normal/high/low quality H.264 MPEG-4. Author's comments: I believe that this may be a perfect time by Speeddemosarchive 's timing of Super Mario Bros. 1. First off, I'd like to thank my brother for helping me figure out a faster way of beating the game. If it weren't for him, a run like this probably wouldn't have been seen for a long while. I also want to thank those who encouraged me...

Speed run of Final Fantasy II in 38 segments completed on December 19 2005. Available in low quality only, video quality is poor when moving in the overworld. Timing note: Game's timer is referenced at its last visible point, then real time from then to final damage numbers appearing is added. Resulting time is rounded up to the next whole minute since the game timer could've have been :59 seconds at the last visible moment. Speed run of Castlevania: Lament of Innocence in 9 segments, completed on November 26 2004. Available in three versions: low quality, normal quality, and 60 fps high quality. Author's comments: On Undead Parasite (House of Sacred Remains boss, first boss) i should have gathered many more hearts and maxed them out. the sweeping Holy Water abusing on this boss would make both forms go by much quicker. On Stone Golem, my strategy is fairly nice. however, i can't help but feel the Holy Water would...

Speed run of Doom 3 on Marine skill in 6 segments completed on August 19 2005. Available in 320x240 and 640x480 versions. Timing note: Not timed consistantly with later runs. It included everything but loading screens, but it was shown that black screens before the loading screen comes up is also system-dependent. The difference is about two minutes in this case. Author's comments: Second time I've beat this game, second run I've attemped. It took me a bit longer then I thought to complete this...

Incomplete speed run of Jak & Daxter 2 for the PlayStation 2. Was disqualified for submission to Speed Demos Archive when the second of four source VHS tapes was lost in the mail. Author's comments: October 15, 2005 - Ben Fichter There are two reasons why I didn't do this run months ago: 1) I was afraid that it would be longer than 7 hours. 2) The game is difficult. Not only have they removed just about everything that can speed up your progress, like rocket jumping, they have also blocked like 99% of all possible shortcuts with invisible walls. Ludicrous-speed bouncing around. Completed without collecting any emeralds, with both Sonic and Tails controlled by the player. This run takes everything you know about Sonic and Knuckles and turns it upside-down. It is worth noting that nitsuja and Upthorn did not directly participate in the creation of...

10-segment speed run of Metroid Prime completed on December 9, 2007 collecting all items in what is thought to be an order intended by the game's designers - a so-called "natural route run". Available in low, normal, high and insane quality. Author's commentary: This run is not a real speedrun, it is very sloppy and crappy, it is as sloppy done as my natural route low% 29% 1:53. I didn't care about it and i wasn't even really trying. I just wanted to make a video of my new route; i...

Speed run of Alien vs. Predator for Jaguar as the alien, done on August 11 2004. Author's comments: The Alien's game felt the most like a real Speed Run. I reset probably fifty times trying to get an enemy spawn set with which I could survive to Sublevel 2 and quickly cocoon two Marines once at Sublevel 2. Rachel and I decided that this would be the quickest way to the Queen with the littlest costly backtracking, and I was determined not to compromise. I would be extremely interested to see a...

Single-segment speed run of Banjo Kazooie with 100% item collection (jiggies, notes & honeycombs) done on November 13 2004. Author's comments: I must thank: Brad "Cyberwrath" Cutler: My right hand man, he was an immense help and inspiration. We both worked on strategy and tactics for the run. I'm not sure if he's better than me at BK, but he sure does have more courage when it comes to some situations... Uilnslcoap: His GameFAQs guide was of some assistance. Many of my strategies...

Single-segment speed run of Phantasy Star Online Episode III: C.A.R.D. Revolution, Hero side, done on April 30 2005. Available in low, norml, and high quality. Author's comments: Much like Brighstar/Jonathan_F from pso-world I work for a PSO fan site (www.ragol.co.uk) and got the Japanese version of PSO III first. A code to covert the Japanese into partial English was released but there was a lot of translation errors. I soon got bored of these errors and left PSO for a long time. I recently...

Super Metroid (PAL) - Any% TAS in 0:25 by Saturn, completed in July 5, 2010. This is a reworked any% TAS of Super Metroid, aiming for fastest completion time without restrictions. It uses a fully optimized route, which collects all the necessary items to maximize mobility, variety, and damage power of the beams for much quicker battles, while also using the latest speed tricks and boss strategies, with some of them never seen before. The result is a game completion of only 25 minutes, which is...

Legend of Zelda (ゼルダの伝説) is an adventure game that easily takes you days to beat. Its world is so huge and full of obscure secrets that without great deal of planning you won't make it in less than many hours. The previous Zelda movie which was designed together by many masterminds at the Nesvideos forums and played by Sleepz has now been beaten by Phil by 86 seconds because of tactical changes mostly. The Up+A trick (save and restart) was used in this movie several times. It was...

For more details, see http://tasvideos.org/610M.html Selected comments from the author: "This time it's the very old game Circus Charlie. I made it mostly because I played this game as a child and it is a great memory for me ;) Hmm, the gameplay is comparably to Kung Fu, Balloon Fight or Popeye. Very old and easy and it goes on forever. However it just loops after stage 5 so I stopped my fmv there. Hmm, I don't know if you have played this game but as I said it's very simple. Speed run of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night as Richter Belmont done on July 12 2005. Available in normal and low quality. Author's comments: Well, this is my second time speedrunning Symphony of the Night using Richter. Credit goes to Mike Uyama who let me know that I didn't use the right path the first time around, which eventually brought me to Persona's video. Persona had some useful techniques to get through many of the rooms so credit goes to him as well. Unfortunately, there were...

For more information, see http://tasvideos.org/942M.html Final Fantasy V is probably the least known of the Final Fantasy series on the SNES, because it was never published in the USA. This movie plays through the game in three and a half hours. We recommend reading the authorâs comments regarding this movie to understand the manipulation used.

Single-segment speed run of Resident Evil: Code Veronica X [eu] for GameCube completed in 2:18:20 on August 18, 2006. Was rejected for posting on Speed Demos Archive. Author's comments: I can't say I'm done with the game. I played back the tape and thought alot about whether to send this in or not because I got really lucky with monster routes, but then had a shitload of badluck elsewhere to even out what would've been a really good run. This is a normal thing with the game, but it's something...

Speed run of Metroid which skips one boss, using the early Tourian trick, done approx April 15 2004. Available in normal and 60fps high quality versions. Author's comments: This is a speed run of Metroid for the NES that finishes in 22 minutes. In this run, I skipped Norfair entirely and went after the Mother Brain with barely enough missiles to do the job. This isn't a particularly well executed run, but I was fortunate at critical points which made this run worth keeping. This run is also...

This game is sort of Contra 2. The guy who has infinite supply of ammo and who destroys worlds bare-chested is back! This movie is a 39 seconds improvement to the previous version and wasn't stuck with the fire button. Single-segment proper 70-star speed run of Super Mario 64, done on June 24 2004. Author's comments: This is a traditional speed run of Super Mario 64. I collected the bare minimum of stars required to beat the game - 70 - WITHOUT ridiculous glitches that involve warping through doors. I use a variety of tricks and routes not used or known by the casual player to earn the world record. The purpose of a NBMB run in Super Metroid is to get as many items as possible after getting bombs, without ever fighting another boss or mini-boss. Although a lot items are easy to get, many require difficult tricks using glitches to achieve, such as items in Maridia and lower Norfair. Available in both mpeg4 and DivX versions. Author's comments: Hey. This is my No Boss/Mini Boss 72% run. 73% is the max, but the last item is dumb. Enjoy.

Available as Divx 102x768 or 320x240 and original recording as .dem file, which requires version 1.1.2.0 of Half-Life to play. Speed run of Super Mario 64, done on June 13 2005. Utilizes several glitches through doors to finish the game with only 16 stars, far short of the intended minimum of 70. Recorded on the European [PAL] version of the game, which runs at about 5/6 the speed of the NTSC version. Author's comments: The PAL version of SM64 is obviously slower than the NTSC version, therefor it's good to have separate records for these different systems.
